Oklahoma’s laws are changing fast, and not always in your favor.
I want you to stay informed, because the choices our lawmakers are making today will impact you, your loved ones, and your community tomorrow. Here are the biggest updates you need to know:
New DUI Laws Coming November 1, 2025
Oklahoma’s DUI laws are about to get much tougher. Starting November 1, 2025, certain DUI-related actions will automatically become felony aggravated DUIs under the Marissa Murrow Act and Senate Bill 54.
That means if you are arrested for DUI and you were:
- Driving while speeding
- Causing a crash while impaired
- Driving drunk with a minor in the car
…it will no longer be treated as “just a DUI.” These are felony charges with mandatory jail time, even if it is your first offense.
One mistake could now change your life forever.
What to do if you are stopped
- Say nothing. Sign nothing. Blow nothing.
- Clearly state: “I want to speak with my attorney.”
- Then call me immediately.
Age of Consent Raised to 18 (Effective August 28, 2025)
The legal age of consent in Oklahoma is being raised from 16 to 18 under House Bill 1003. Governor Kevin Stitt signed this into law on May 28, 2025.
Here is what you need to know:
- Romeo and Juliet exception: Teens over 16 in consensual relationships are protected if the age difference is less than four years.
- What this means: Sexual activity with anyone under 18 is considered statutory rape, with the narrow exception above.
Lawmakers pushed this change as part of efforts to protect minors from predators, trafficking, and abuse.
Child Marriage Ban (Effective November 1, 2025)
In a separate measure, Oklahoma passed the Child Protection Act of 2025. This law raises the legal marriage age and bans child marriages that were once allowed under certain exceptions.
This means stricter protections for minors and the closure of legal loopholes that once allowed exploitative situations.
Why This Matters
Whether it is DUI laws, age of consent changes, or marriage restrictions, the pattern is the same: Oklahoma is moving toward harsher penalties and tighter rules.
I believe in protecting victims, but I also know these broad laws can sweep up good people who never thought they would be in legal trouble. That is why staying informed is your first line of defense.
